On the southern side of the Catskill Mountains, in a section of the Willowemoc Wild Forest, lies a small pond named Frick. Even in the middle of summer this secluded body of water remains quite cool.

The night is haunted by the calls of coyotes, echoing across the mountain valley. Barred owls prowl the quiet forest for prey, calling to each other excitedly as they return to the nest. A passing raccoon munches on a tasty morsel found in a pool. Man is audible in the distance, idling his truck, lighting his fireworks.

The morning breaks with a subdued dawn chorus. Songbirds flit among the surrounding bog, bickering over feeding spots. As the sun rises above the mountain, a half dozen Ruby-throated Hummingbirds fuss around a large patch of flowering bushes.
