about

Early Spring in upstate New York is a somewhat quiet affair. The distribution of species that communicate with sound is sparse during this time. Many insects, like crickets, have not yet hatched. Migratory birds have just started to make their way back North and the trees have only the faintest hue of color from nascent leaves. This is especially true in the mountains.

As the sun sets though, there is a small flurry of activity. A few songbirds make their presence known. An owl calls out, a little warning to prey of the evening hunt. Wood frogs and spring peepers gather at the ephemeral wetlands created from rain and the now melted snow. Wood cocks dance, punctuating the early evening with peents and whistles.

These two recordings were made with a custom partially baffled parallel boundary array using AT4022 microphones. Very light equalization was applied. The recording made April 3rd 2010 in the Cherry Ridge Wild Forest in Delaware County, New York, but the sounds are stereotypical of a great deal of the upstate NY mountainous areas.
